For 20 some years, John Van Vliet has been biting the hand that feeds him. An accomplished animator and visual effects supervisor, John is known -- perhaps even more widely-- as a sly observer of the film business and a wickedly witty cartoonist. In 1988, he began publishing his take-no-prisoners cartoons in an annual promotional calendar for his company, Available Light, and continued to do so--with a couple of years off for ostensibly good behavior--until 2000. The calendars adorned the walls of effects houses and production offices throughout the industry.
John has since been compiling the best of his drawings and cartoons, adding a few words, and shaping them into a book, Scribbles in the Darkness: Sketchy Recollections of a Migrant Film Worker--which may actually be published one day, should he ever allow himself to consider it finished. That may be a problem, however, since every film assignment John takes on inspires him to add another chapter. It's cheaper than therapy, we're sure he would say.
